All Members of the Board of Directors, Staff, and Area Leaders must approve of this statement in writing before becoming a leader with Christians Engaged

Leadership Excellence

Furthermore, you shall select out of all the people able men who fear God, men of truth, those who hate dishonest gain; and you shall place these over them as leaders of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties and of tens. (Exodus 18:21)

  • Ability

    • Proverbs 22:29: Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will stand before kings; He will not stand before obscure men.

  • Fear God

    • Proverbs 9:10: The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

Above Reproach

It is a trustworthy statement: if any man aspires to the office of overseer, it is a fine work he desires to do. An overseer, then, must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, prudent, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not addicted to wine or pugnacious, but gentle, peaceable, free from the love of money…. And he must have a good reputation with those outside the church, so that he will not fall into reproach and the snare of the devil. -(1 Timothy 3:1-3 & 7) – see also Titus 1:6-9

  • Faithful in Marriage – morally pure

    • 1 Thessalonians 4:3: For this is the will of God, your sanctification; that is, that you abstain from sexual immorality;

    • Hebrews 13:4: Marriage is to be held in honor among all, and the marriage bed is to be undefiled; for fornicators and adulterers God will judge.

  • Temperate – not excessive in passion, self-controlled

    • Galatians 5:22-24: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

  • Prudent – wise, humble, and sensible

    • Proverbs 14:8: The wisdom of the sensible is to understand his way, But the foolishness of fools is deceit.

    • Philippians 2:3: Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves;

  • Respectable – a good role model

    • Titus 2:6-8: Likewise urge the young men to be sensible; in all things show yourself to be an example of good deeds, with purity in doctrine, dignified, 8 sound in speech which is beyond reproach….

  • Hospitable – unselfish & generous

    • 1 Peter 4:9: Be hospitable to one another without complaint.

  • Able to teach – communicates the truth in love

    • Titus 1:9: holding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict.

    • 1 Peter 3:15: but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence;

  • Not addicted to wine – or any other substance

    • Romans 13:13: Let us behave properly as in the day, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual promiscuity and sensuality, not in strife and jealousy.

    • Ephesians 5:18: And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit,

  • Not pugnacious - gentle and peaceable

    • James 3:13: Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show by his good behavior his deeds in the gentleness of wisdom.

    • James 3:17: But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy.

  • Free of the love of money – not greedy, but generous

    • Matthew 6:24: “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.

  • Maintain a good reputation – without reproach from those outside the Church

    • Philippians 2:15: so that you will prove yourselves to be blameless and innocent, children of God above reproach in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you appear as lights in the world,

    • Colossians 4:5: Conduct yourselves with wisdom toward outsiders, making the most of the opportunity

Seek Unity Within the Church

  • Psalm 133:1: Behold, how good and how pleasant it is For brothers to dwell together in unity!

  • Ephesians 4:3-4: being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling;

  • Colossians 3:14: Beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity.

Share the Gospel with Those Outside the Church

  • Mathew 28:19-20: Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.

Reconciles with Other Believers

  • When conflict arises, following Jesus’ teaching

    • Matthew 5:23-24: Therefore if you are presenting your offering at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your offering there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and present your offering.

  • Matthew 18: 15-17: If your brother sins, Go and show him his fault in private; if he listens to you, you have won your brother. But if he does not listen to you, take one or two more with you, so that by the mouth of two or three witnesses every act may be confirmed. If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.
