The Importance of Giving Thanks (Especially in Times of Trouble)

By Ian Stageman

It goes without saying that this past year has been difficult. Between the pandemic, lockdowns, political and social turmoil, it has been a trying time for us all.

Many believed that once we ushered in a new year, we’d be rid of the pervading sense of pressure and strife—but, for many, 2021 has just been a continuation of the previous year’s difficulties and stresses. Since the pandemic began, there’s been a near-continual discussion of the so-called “new normal”, as disillusionment with our institutions and leaders continues to grow.

What are we to do in moments such as these?

While our first impulse is oftentimes to grumble, analyze, or pacify ourselves—God’s Word calls us to rejoice and give thanks.

“Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.” -1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

This isn’t a mere suggestion – it is a command. We are to give thanks in all things

While it can, at times, be advantageous to discuss our troubles and find practical solutions, entering such realms of human reasoning can be a barrier between us and the peace that only comes through Christ Jesus. Sometimes the holiest and most prudent decision we can make is to unplug from outside stimuli and fill our hearts and mouths with praise.

“Oh give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; for His steadfast love endures forever!” -1 Chronicles 16:34

As followers of Christ, we have the capability to not only make it through trials, but to do so joyfully, with a song on our lips. It does us no good to pray for peace, comfort, and hope, and then to turn around and undermine those very prayers with conversations filled with pessimism and negativity.

Our leaders, government, and institutions WILL disappoint us - without question. But if our eyes and hope are fixed upon Christ, with a practice of praise on our lips, we will not be shaken.

What are you thankful for? Take a moment and name 10 things for which you are thankful. I guarantee that it’ll raise your spirits (and if it doesn’t, name 10 more!)

“This is the day that the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” -Psalm 118:24
