Jesus, Our Everlasting Possession

By: David McFadden

“For His Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God’s children. And since we are His children, we are His heirs. In fact, together with Christ we are heirs of God’s glory.” —Romans 8:16-17

Jesus is the “heir of all things.” The boundless realms of His Father’s universe are Christ’s by absolute authority. He is the sole proprietor of the vast creation of God, and He has permitted His believers to claim it with Him as joint heirs. Believers are the bride of Christ, and by virtue, the Lord has ratified His covenant of heirship with His chosen people.

All that He has, He shares with His people. The golden streets of paradise, the pearly gates, the river of life, the transcendent bliss, and the unutterable glory, are, by our blessed Lord, made over to us for our everlasting possession. He has placed the royal crown upon the head of His Church, appointing her a kingdom. He calls His son and daughters a royal priesthood, a generation of priests and kings.

For a brief moment in time, Jesus uncrowned Himself and dwelt among us so that we might join Him in His coronation of glory. His Father willed that Jesus would not sit upon His own throne until He had procured a place upon it for all who overcome by His blood. It has been said, “Crown the head and the whole body shares the honor.” Behold herein is the reward of every Christian conqueror! Jesus’ throne, crown, scepter, palace, treasure, robes, heritage, are yours.

Being in Christ is happiness because He shares His glory with His people, which is far superior to jealousy, selfishness, and greed, which have no advantage. Jesus declared to the Father, “The glory which You gave Me have I given them.” And He assured His beloved, “These things have I spoken unto you, that My joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.”

The smiles of His Father are all the sweeter to Jesus because His people share them. The honors of His kingdom are more pleasing because His people appear with Him in glory. Jesus and His victory are more valuable, since they have taught His people to overcome. He delights in His throne because on it there is a place for His beloved. He delights even more in His joy because we answer His call to enter with Him and claim it as His joint heirs.

Taking God’s Word Back to Him

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your marvelous plan to include me as a joint-heir with Jesus. He has prepared His kingdom for His beloved, and I am counted as one of His. Thank You for the covenant of heirship and the promise of eternal bliss and for sharing the unutterable glory given as  an everlasting possession. Thank You for giving me the faith and the power to overcome by His blood. And because of this, I am a conqueror in Jesus’ name and receive His reward with Him.  Thank You that I am a joint heir of all joy and happiness because Jesus shares His glory with me, saying to me, “These things have I spoken unto you, that My joy might remain in you, and that  your joy might be full.” LORD, help me even more enter into His joy and claim it as His joint heir. I proclaim Your work of salvation in me in Jesus’ precious name. Amen.
