Guide for the TX Municipal Runoff Elections

By Christians Engaged Leadership

Although Election Day was on November 3rd, there are still a number of races throughout our state that have yet to be decided by city runoff elections. These are non-partisan races, so you will not see a D or an R beside their names. They could be city council spots or school board spots - but they are always important.

Since Governor Abbott moved the city elections in 2020 from May to November 3rd because of the coronavirus pandemic - there were city races on most of the November 3rd ballots around the state of Texas. If a candidate did not receive over 50% of the total votes, the top two candidates have to compete in a runoff election. This is occurring in many counties at present.

Normally we don't have runoff elections in December but your county officials had the freedom to set the dates anytime before the first of the year. NOTE: The dates are not consistent around the state. The runoff election and early voting dates vary by county, so you will need to visit your county’s elections department website for dates, voting locations, and your sample ballot.

Relative to general elections, voter turnout is generally much lower in runoff elections, so if you have a runoff in your area, your vote will likely make a much greater impact on the overall totals. The voter turnout for many of these races will be less than 2% of registered voters.

Because of the stakes for these cities and school boards, it is imperative for voters to vet and research the candidates, so print off your sample ballot and please spend a few minutes researching these important candidates.

Thank you for taking these elections seriously and building a habit of voting in every election. If we can help you at any time during this process - feel free to contact us at info@christiansengaged.org.
